Role of Copper in Rye Production

The role of copper in small grain production is associated in some way with chlorophyll development and enzyme activities.

It is also a constituent of several enzymes involved in carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Since copper is needed in a very minute amount, there is no universally accepted application rate. The best time to apply Copper is when planting in the autumn. Applying too much copper as a foliar spray may cause burning and reduce yield.

Deficiencies: Symptoms are found on the youngest leaves due to the low mobility of Cu within the crop.  The deficiency frequently causes a stunted, yellow (chlorotic) plant with twisted, dying leaf tips. The general symptoms resemble cold injury.
