Role of Nitrogen in Rye Production
It is a key component of enzymes, vitamins, chlorophyll and other cell constituents, which are essential for crop growth and development.
Nitrogen promotes vegetative growth in rye and at the same time influences the qualitative features (1000 grain weight, number of grains / spike, protein content). The measurement of N-fertilization in rye is challenging, since it is sensitive to a too high N supply, particularly as lodging is concerned. In order to calculate the amount of correct mineral N fertilization, the N-remnants in the soil must be considered.
| Stage | Nitrogen effect |
| Autumn after sowing | Root development, early growth and good tillering. |
| Spring as growth starts | Promotes further development. |
| Late may, stages 32-37 | Fullfills growth and ensures a good protein level. |
