Role of Phosphorus in Rye Production

Phosphorus is a component of nucleic acids and lipids.

It is important in the production and transport of sugars, fat and proteins within the plant. Phosphorus promotes good and rapid root development in this way ensuring good absorption of nutrients.

Phosphorus is quite immobile in the soil and can only be absorbed within 1-2 mm from the root. Therefore a placement of P can give a higher efficiency, particularly on cold soils where mineralization of P is low. The need for P can easily be determined with a soil analysis.

Deficiencies: The primary P deficiency symptom is a brown to purple colour of the leaf, starting at the tips of older leaves on the seedling.
