Role of Potassium in Rye Production

Potassium has an important role with the regulation of water within the plant and in controlling the water loss from the leaves.

In this way it improves the plant's drought resistance.  It aids in carbohydrate production and winter survival. Potassium controls the ionic concentrations inside the plant tissues, including the stomata.  Where required, potassium should be placed within the seed.

Deficiencies: Symptoms are difficult to detect, but include short internodes and weak stems, the plants remain small and lack vigor.  Winter hardiness can be reduced and the heads formed are small and compact.  Potassium deficiency seldom occur in small grains like rye.
